An American Bull Dog named Colin

I am nearing the end of one of the most entertaining months of my life. I am lucky in that I have a very varied job and love every moment of my working day but the past four weeks have been particularly rewarding and fun. And the reason? A young American Bull Dog pup named Colin. My goodness. What a delight. He has all the usual, glorious characteristics of a Bull Breed - fun, enthusiastic, sociable, engaging, calm, and supremely intelligent but with the added bonus of being totally deaf.

Recently, we appealed for a home for Sophie, an American Bulldog x Stafford and within a short period of time Sophie found her special home. She is loving every minute of it learning clicker training and coming on leaps and bounds. Now we are appealing again, this time for a litter of American Bulldog puppies.

The Tenth Anniversary of the Dangerous Dogs Act Amendment

Ten years ago this month marks the introduction of the Dangerous Dogs Act (Amendment) which became law on the 8th June 1997. It was the only time the now infamous DDA legislation had been changed since its introduction in 1991 and it has never since been altered. Ten years on and we take a look at where we are now with the breed specific component of the law.

Objective for Future 'Dangerous Dogs' Legislation by Dangerous Dogs Act Study Group

The issue of dangerous dogs and protecting the public has been one that has posed a problem for legislators for many years. Legislation concerning this dates back to 1871 with the Dogs Act. This provides for any person to make a complaint to a Magistrate's court that a dog is dangerous or report the matter to the police. If the court is satisfied that the dog is dangerous and is not being kept under proper control then it may make an order for it to be kept by the owner under proper control or destroyed.

Sophie's Story

Can you give it a happy ending? Almost one year ago, at the tender age of just five weeks old, Sophie and her littermates were handed over to rescue. They were said to be a deliberate crossbreeding, Stafford with American bulldog. All five of the litter went into foster care, had their vet checks, vaccinations and were microchipped. Soon they were ready for new homes .....

Another Day - Another Dollar

Ever wondered who really pays the price? We'll show you who. Seven unwanted American Bulldog puppies and their mum arrive in rescue. All had been kept in appalling conditions and were stumbled on by the Police during a raid on the house, windows had to be opened as the smell was that awful. They were signed over 'for disposal', the Police asked Rescue to take them all and their mum.

Collar a Pound Puppy Appeal

Dear Mum and Dad, I died today. You got tired of me and took me to the pound. They were overcrowded and I drew an unlucky number. I am in a black plastic bag in a landfill now. Some other puppy will get the barely used leash you left. My collar was dirty and too small, but the lady took it off before she sent me to the Rainbow Bridge.

DeedNOTBreed Seeks Missing Owners

DeedNOTBreed are desperately seeking the owners of 16 dogs due to appear at Liverpool Magistrates Court on Friday 20th April. The group supported 13 owners during the last magistrate's hearing which saw all 16 dogs successfully added to the Index of Exempt Dogs rather than destroyed as the distraught owners of these pet dogs had feared.

Bring Them Home Appeal

The Dangerous Dogs Act (DDA) is a draconian piece of legislation which has been widely criticised and is in desperate need of change. Pet dogs are persecuted on account of their appearance alone, many dogs are currently held in Police appointed kennels awaiting their fate as they are the 'wrong' shape and size according to law. Accused of owning a 'prohibited type', using a very broad criteria, their owners have to go through the court system, once found guilty, the court can either order destruction or registration of the dog. Section 4b of the DDA is civil action and owners are unlikely to obtain legal aid.

KNEE-JERK DOG AMNESTY IS UNLIKELY TO PROTECT THE PUBLIC

Across Merseyside, a Dog Amnesty begins tomorrow (7th February 2007) WHICH WILL BRING THE ABOUT DEATH OF ANY DOG HANDED IN. The DeedNOTBreed group strongly oppose this Amnesty for two reasons: We are concerned the Amnesty will not work to make Merseyside a safer place for the public. Without a doubt, it will kill dogs. However, we feel owners of aggressive dogs - whatever their breed - will go further underground and are unlikely to hand in dogs. Instead, innocent family pets will be destroyed.
